Twitch chat as a signal

Use Twitch chat to find the best moments of your stream

When chat goes wild, something is usually happening on screen. For Twitch lives captured by Live Watcher and for Twitch VODs you paste into Nysos, chat is read as one more signal, alongside audio, picture and transcript. Nysos uses it to spot strong moments and suggests them as vertical 9:16 subtitled clips. You choose what you publish.

How it works

01

Paste a Twitch VOD or turn on Live Watcher

Paste a Twitch VOD link into the form, or let Live Watcher monitor your Twitch channel. In both cases, Nysos also retrieves the chat along with the video, so it can use it when looking for the strongest moments.

02

Nysos cross-checks chat with the rest

Nysos reads the chat at the same time as the audio, the picture and the transcript. A chat surge counts as one signal among others: a moment can stand out even when the chat stays quiet.

03

Pick your clips

The moments found are suggested as 9:16 subtitled clips, with the facecam on top if a corner webcam is detected. You watch them, adjust if needed, then download or publish whichever ones you want to keep.

What Nysos looks at in the chat

Nysos looks at how fast the chat is speeding up: the number of messages is compared with the previous 5 minutes. A chat that goes from a relaxed pace to a burst of messages stands out, and the matching moment is taken into account among the possible highlights of your stream.

The content of the messages matters too, in a few specific forms: laughter, hype or shock emotes, messages in capital letters, very short messages and repetitions, when everybody sends the same thing at once. These are signs of a collective reaction rather than a relaxed conversation. Together, these details help tell a real reaction from ordinary background noise.

Bots, spam and a 3-second offset

A chat contains noise. Known bots are filtered out, and spam from a single user is limited: one person flooding the chat should not be enough to make a calm moment look like a highlight. The goal is to keep only the real reaction of your community. This keeps the reading closer to what viewers actually felt.

Viewers react a few seconds after what they have just seen. Nysos therefore applies a 3-second offset: the chat reaction is tied to the action that triggered it, not to the one that follows. You have nothing to set up for this, it happens during the analysis. It is a small adjustment, but it points the signal at the right moment of the video.

One signal among others, never the only one

Chat never decides alone. Nysos spots strong moments by combining the transcript of what is said, the audio, the picture and, for Twitch, the chat. A moment can stand out thanks to a memorable sentence, a burst of voice or a change in the picture, even if your chat stayed quiet.

The chat is analyzed behind the scenes: you simply see suggested clips, and you choose the ones you publish. Suggestions stay suggestions, yours to keep or not. The reading of the chat is done for you, and what you get is a list of clips.

Where chat is taken into account

Chat is read in two cases: Twitch lives captured by Live Watcher, and Twitch VODs pasted into the form, for which the chat replay is retrieved. Live Watcher is included in every plan, free plan included, and starts processing when the live ends. In both cases the chat is gathered along with the video, so the same logic applies whether you stream live or paste an existing VOD.

Twitch clips come out with the same subtitles and the same layout, facecam on top when it is detected.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I use Twitch chat to find the best moments of a stream?

Paste a Twitch VOD or turn on Live Watcher on your Twitch channel. Nysos retrieves the chat and uses it as one signal among others, alongside audio, picture and transcript. You then get suggested 9:16 subtitled clips and you choose the ones you want to keep.

Does Nysos make a clip automatically when chat goes wild?

Nysos spots the moments where chat goes wild, takes them into account with the other signals and suggests them as clips. For a live, processing starts when the broadcast ends. You then choose what to download or publish.

What exactly does Nysos look at in the chat?

It looks at how much the message rate speeds up compared with the previous 5 minutes, laughter, hype or shock emotes, messages in capital letters, very short messages and repetitions. Known bots are filtered out and spam from a single user is limited.

Do bots and spam throw off the detection?

Nysos limits that risk: known bots are filtered out and spam from a single user is limited. A 3-second offset is also applied, because chat reacts after the action. Chat remains one signal among others anyway, with audio, picture and transcript.

What happens if my chat is quiet or almost empty?

You get clips either way. Chat is one signal among others: Nysos also relies on the transcript, the audio and the picture to spot strong moments, whether your chat is quiet or lively.

Which videos does Nysos read the Twitch chat for?

For Twitch lives captured by Live Watcher and for Twitch VODs pasted into the form. In both cases the chat is retrieved with the video, then read alongside the audio, the picture and the transcript to spot strong moments.
